WHY SOME LEADERS ONLY VALUE TALENT WHEN THEY SEE IT AT ANOTHER TABLE
WHY SOME LEADERS ONLY VALUE TALENT WHEN THEY SEE IT AT ANOTHER TABLE
A Special Reflection by Elder Dan Muhindo, DDK Executive Director

THE PAINFUL TRUTH THAT SETS YOU FREE
What is one of the most painful, yet profoundly liberating, truths every dedicated professional will eventually encounter on their journey to success?
It is this: Your true value is not defined by those who fail to see it, but by those who welcome your potential with open arms.
Some people never understand what you bring to the table... until they see you sitting at another table.
In every school, church, business, and cooperative, there are people who give their absolute all. They arrive early. They stay late. They solve problems behind the scenes. They quietly hold entire teams together.
Yet their ideas are brushed aside. Their loyalty is taken for granted. Their presence is treated as a given, not a gift.
If that is you today, hear me clearly: Your worth does not decrease based on someone else’s inability to see it.
THE ILLUSION OF FAMILIARITY
Why do leaders fail to recognize the exceptional talent right in front of them?
Jesus said it in Mark 6:4:
> “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”
I call it the trap of familiarity.
When you deliver excellence without complaint, people mistake your sacrifice for routine. Because you make hard work look easy, they assume it requires no skill. They become dependent on your output but blind to the person behind it.
As Peter Drucker taught us:
> “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
And I add: The best way to lose the future is to ignore the people creating it for you today.
WHEN THE TABLE TURNS
But God has a way of vindicating purpose.
The moment you walk away and sit at another table—a table that honors you, that listens to you, that pays you—the same people start asking, “Who are doing their books now? Who is advising them? Who is running that cooperative?”
Joseph was overlooked in Potiphar’s house until he was needed in Pharaoh’s palace. David was forgotten in the field until he was anointed for the throne.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 –
> “The race is not to the swift... but time and chance happen to them all.”
Your time is coming. Your table is coming. Don’t quit before it arrives.
A WORD TO LEADERS
To every Head Teacher, CEO, Pastor, and Board Chair:
Stop waiting to appreciate people after they leave. John Maxwell said:
> “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Talent that is taken for granted will be taken elsewhere. And when it goes, it takes systems, trust, and momentum with it.
Build a culture where excellence is celebrated while the person is still at your table.
A WORD TO THE PROFESSIONAL
To the bursar, the accountant, the teacher, and the field officer:
Don’t shrink to fit a small table. Grow until you find, or build, a table big enough for your calling.
Galatians 6:9 –
> “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Your current table may not clap for you. But heaven sees. And the right table will.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The world is full of titles. It’s starving for character.
Titles tell me your position. Character tells me your person.
Before you ask for a promotion, ask, "Am I ready to serve?”
Before you ask for more staff, ask, "Am I ready to care?”
Because titles expire.
But character echoes.
